Slow Down!

Gardens this time of year call us to stop and gaze, and drink in the beauty of the colors and shapes of the many different flowers. I am treated each day with magnificent gardens at Trinity United Methodist Church in Wilmette when I arrive at my office or look out the window during the day. I also have my garden at home that provides a never-ending supply of new life and beauty (and work). These gardens refresh and renew my spirit. They remind me of the importance of slowing down, taking in the beauty around me and stopping to smell the roses.
One of the ways to slow down and smell the roses all year long is to take time to pray. The practice of prayer connects us with our deeper selves, with God, as well as opens us to the people in our lives and beyond. Practically, it can also help reduce stress and contribute to physical well-being.
There are many ways to pray. Begin by setting aside some time in the day to be alone. This is one of the most difficult parts of starting a prayer life. We are all so busy. It’s hard to imagine even ten minutes a day of quiet. But with determination it can be done. Decide on a time of day that fits you best. This could be first thing in the morning, at noon, or night. Start by just being quiet without telephone, television or noise. Just sit and listen quietly, breathe deeply and let the mind relax. This can be a very calming and renewing experience. Prayer time can include meditating, reading scripture or saying a favorite prayer or hymn. The important thing is to take the time apart to slow down and put some focus on the deeper parts of your life. It can be a time to listen to what God is telling you or to pray for the people and concerns in your life.
As summer turns to fall, let us commit ourselves to finding ways to stop and smell the roses all year long. Let’s slow down, be quiet, pray.
